Het Parool: 10 MUST DO’S!

CULTURE

1. Mag Het Licht Aan Festival
Philosophize, think, talk, dream, dance, listen, and watch! The ideal place for idealists this weekend is the “Mag Het Licht Aan Festival” (May the Light Be On Festival) at the Tolhuistuin in the North. On Sunday, June 21st, you can take out-of-the-box steps at the Philosophical Experience, ponder sustainability, be inspired by the exhibition ‘Embodied Spaces,’ do the honest Groceries Basket check, or attend an ‘Instant Happiness’ workshop. And enjoy dance, theater, poetry, film, and music.

TO DO

2. Dag van de Architectuur
Go on an architectural safari, an exploration along the banks of the IJ. Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st of June is the Day of Architecture. You won’t encounter giraffes and bisons, but you can join the Harbour Cruise on the IJ on Saturday, where they will tell you all about architectural marvels and special places around the river.

Afraid of water? There’s also a 16-kilometer-long cycling route around the IJ, connecting all 32 open buildings with the nine ‘spots’, important locations in the redevelopment of the banks (such as the NDSM wharf and the Oosterdokseiland).

At all these places, you can find guided tours by architects and residents, or information booths. And on Sunday, on the ferry, you might just come across storyteller and IJ riverside expert Remy Vlek.

EAT

3. De NeighbourFood Market
The NeighbourFood Market has a special edition this weekend: the Classique Weekender. Think of grandmother’s dishes, meals from the Middle Ages, and elderly cooking methods. There is also classical music: the KlanKKast symphony orchestra will be performing. And at the flea market, it’s a classic mess. The entire weekend in and in front of the Zuiveringshal at the Westergasfabriek.

KIDS

4. Kamperen in Natuurspeeltuin Het Woeste Westen
The opportunity to spend a night in an urban wilderness. On Saturday, June 20, children are allowed to pitch their tents in Nature Playground “Het Woeste Westen” to celebrate its fifth anniversary. Camping games, a campfire with stories and guitar music, a night game, and then off to bed. In the morning, you can gather your own breakfast. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

MOVIE

5. Rooftop Movie Night
Cuddle up under a blanket in the comfortable bean bags on the seventeenth floor of the Ramada Hotel. Here, the Rooftop Movie Night is organized. It’s convenient that the movies start at a quarter to ten because the sun sets late this weekend. Feeling a bit spicy? On Friday, Fifty Shades of Grey is playing.

OPEN

6. Oedipus Brewing
Oedipus Brewing will open the doors of its new location on Friday, June 19th. It’s a brewery, tasting room, and workspace for artists all in one. And that’s definitely worth celebrating with live music and hamburgers from The Beef Chief. In honor of the occasion, the newest beer, Rhubarb Ria, will also be introduced—a tribute to Rick’s mother, one of the founders.

SHOPPING

7. De IJ-Hallen Vlooienmarkt
Are you still looking for a grandma teapot, knitted bikini, or cat necklace? This Saturday and Sunday, it’s happening again: the IJ-hallen flea market in the North. Come early for the finest items and later in the afternoon for the bargains.

BORREL

8. De Ceuvel
The Ceuvel is celebrating its first anniversary. What do you do then? Naturally, you brew beer using water from the canals. On Saturday, June 20th, alongside the anniversary celebration, the Cleantech Playground De Ceuvel will also open, which is a playground of clean technology. The boat will become a bar again, there will be sustainability workshops, interactive games for children, and live music.

GOING OUT

9. Tram 10
Don’t miss it this Friday, June 19th. Before the summer schedule takes effect, Tram 10 will still run to the last stop of this season. With Sasha Carassi, Tahko, and Paolo & Mr. Milano at the helm.

ART

10. Banksy Expositie ‘Keep it Real’
On Saturday, June 20th, the Banksy exhibition ‘Keep it Real’ will open at the LionelGallery, the largest show of the street artist ever. A sight to behold, as much of Banksy’s street art has been stolen, sometimes with the entire wall. Ten original works and fifty prints are available for purchase. Prices can reach up to one million euros. The works of Banksy can be viewed until July 20th.
